Welcome to KUOPIO-3!The Kuopio Conferences have identified a vital issue facing the Library and Cultural communities. They have successfully highlighted the problems of how to identify low use print resources, how to preserve those materials and, more particularly, how to deal with these issues in a global environment. The Kuopio conferences commenced identifying the problems which library repositories had in storing and preserving these print resources. Through the first two Kuopio conferences they recognized that the problem was not with the local library, nor with the local or national repository but with the need for a global coordination of what is being preserved for research posterity. This identification of the Universal Repository Library (URL) is a recognition of the paradox facing decision-makers. The URL sharply recognizes that print is with us forever, that most of it is commercially non-viable to be converted permanently to digital form and that the desired delivery vehicle is digital. It also announces that there are rich and vital collections across all languages which should be included in this target. The Third Kuopio conference, this year, extends this clear examination of this crucial responsibility in the preservation of the world’s literatures. Where the digital environment correctly is being identified as the future medium of preference, the free availability of a rich historical research collection from all languages and cultures is a increasingly prominent importance. The Google book initiatives will only scratch the surface of a solution. The Google-solution also has a strong commercial dimension to them. Serious focus needs to be focused on what needs to be preserved, when it needs to be preserved and where it needs to be preserved. The overriding driver is that these resources will be freely available across the globe for all peoples, for all times. There is a vast and strongly growing network of Repositories who can link together to create the URL to work toward a solution to the future. This conference will focus on these and future initiatives to create innovative and creative solutions internationally. This conference provides a real and sharp opportunity to address these issues from any number of perspectives including the sociological, systemic, technological, or futuristic perspectives. You are invited to contribute to and attend this conference as one of the continuing opportunities to focus on these very important issues. Contacts:
KUTSU KOLMANTEEN KUOPION KANSAINVÄLISEEN KIRJASTOKONFERENSSIINValtakunnallinen Varastokirjasto täyttää 20 vuotta. Opetusministeriön alaisuudessa toimiva, maan kaikkia kirjastoja palveleva laitos juhlistaa merkkivuottaan järjestämällä Kuopion yliopiston ja Kansalliskirjaston kanssa kolmannen Kuopion kansainvälisen kirjastokonferenssin Taitemiassa 29. ja 30.10.2009 (Piispankatu 8, Kuopio). Maailmassa on lukematon määrä tieteellisesti arvokasta painettua aineistoa, jota tuskin koskaan digitoidaan. On olennaisen tärkeää, että kaikilla kielillä ja kaikilla kulttuureilla on vapaa pääsy tähän rikkaaseen ja historialliseen materiaaliin. The Universal Reposity Library and the guarantees for the sustainability of the digital copy -konferenssin johtoteemana on painetun aineiston rooli digitoituvassa maailmassa. Kysymys ei ole paikallinen eikä edes kansallinen, sillä painetun aineiston käytettävissä pitämiseen tarvitaan maailmanlaajuista koordinaatiota, universaalia varastokirjastojen verkostoa. Juhlakonferenssin teemaa lähestyy eri näkökulmista nimekäs joukko kansainvälisiä ja kotimaisia kirjastoalan asiantuntijoita. Puhujina ovat mm. kirjastonjohtaja Steve O'Connor (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University), professori Derek Law (University of Strathclyde, Skotlanti) sekä Kansalliskirjaston johtaja, ylikirjastonhoitaja Kai Ekholm.
